TRAINING
fit2cook runs a Practical Food Skills Course for teachers, teaching assistants, school cooks or interested parents. This course aims to increase skills and confidence in running a practical cookery lesson or after school cooking club.
We have also run this course for youth and community workers.
Benefits of the course:
This course will enable you to get children/young people cooking and understanding what is meant by healthy eating. It aims to promote cooking and eating well as a fun, rewarding life-skill.
The course can be used as evidence when working towards Healthy School Status (HE2 and HE9), which all schools are being encouraged to do by 2008/9. It will enable a school to deliver a sustained "hands-on" healthy eating programme which could become an important part of a whole school food policy and Ofsted self-evaluation form (see Learning outcomes).
"The fit2cook course changed the way I teach cookery and inspired me to bring it into Golden Time with mixed age- groups. Healthy eating is now a fun and creative activity."- Diana Mugridge, Hart Plain Infant School, Waterlooville. - Winner of the award for Healthy Schools in the South of England
What is covered in the course:
- Promoting healthy eating – key messages and how to explore them in a fun way using sensory exploration, tastings and food games.
- Cooking using minimal equipment – many of our healthy recipes are designed to be used in a classroom with no cooking facilities.
- Making simple recipes – all participants will make one of recipes and learn how to lead a group of children through a recipe.
- Following key food safety and hygiene procedures.
- Teaching key food skills including knife safety.
- Exploring the wider issues of where food comes from, seasonality, recycling etc.
- Overcoming the hurdles of setting up a session – buying equipment, insurance, allergies and risk assessment.
- Every participant will go home with the extensive fit2cook Resource Pack full of simple healthy recipes, lesson plans, talking points and multi-sensory food games.
Venue and duration:
This is a 2 hour course for up to 12 people. It’s usually run as a one off twilight session in a school hall or food tech area.
